The student presented her thesis.
Q, Bell: Is technological progress portrayed as a positive or a negative influence?
A: At the beginning of the novel as bad. But in the whole novel as a connecting element between both characters and I think this is positive.
Q, Bell: Why did you choose this book and topic?
A: I read the book and I was inspired by the connection between the war and the radio and the connection between two children. To me it was quite original and new.
Q, Bell: Is it his first book?
A: No.
Q, Bell: It has been criticized for being too American. How do you respond to that?
A: I don't think it's that positive. Werner dies at the end. And some actions show failure.
Q, Bell: What technologies influenced later wars? And did they have the same influence? For example TV.
A: I think it was used mostly negatively.
Q, Bell: What about today? What about media?
A: I think media can make people afraid. But I think that people should know that there are also good things in the world.
Q, Bell: So do you suggest the last technology used positively was radio?
A: I think so.
Q: On page 22 you mention the use of films as tools of propaganda. Can literature be used in a similar way?
A. I think it can be used as propaganda. (The student answered well.)
Q: Are there any other works in American literature that explore the role of technology in wars? Considering these works, is Doerr’s novel really so original?
A: To me it was original. But there are other authors. For example Tom Clancy. (The student answered well.)
