Záznam průběhu obhajoby
The student presented her bachelor thesis.
Q, Drábková: Characterize Hillary Clinton's rhetoric during the presidential campaigns 2008 and 2016 from the linguistic point of view and compare it. A: Typical are contractions, empty words, showed more aspects of informality. She also used numerals with higher number in 2008 - used to prove points. Next, emotional word, positive and negative, to appeal emotionally on the audince. Abstract nouns, e.g., freedom, fairness, are general nouns, used to achieve general agreement. Did not use passive voice, used active voice in both terms - to sound more informal.
Q, Drábková: What are typical rhetorical strategies used in political speeches and what's their purpose? A: Storry telling strategies - emotional stories, concerned vulnerable people, somehow affected by a catastrophe. Intimidation of possible future, flattering the audience presenting ideas, sarcasm, irony, hyperbole. Q: What about pronouns? A: Usually higher amount of personal pronousns like you or inclusive we - includes the audience, involves everyone. Q: Other pronouns? A: I, that is all. Q: Why would she used these? A: (the student repeated everything she already mentioned)
Q, Machová: How do you define postive and negative word? A: Positive word has a postive appeal. If you use negative word, like... deny, it is a negative words, because it is just... (sentence not finished). Q: Does deny change its meaning when used in a different context? A: (not answered) Q: You know, well - what is the terminology? A: Empty words.
Q, Trušník: (gave the student a paragraph to analyze) A: Inclusive we, a lot of names, words pointing at formality, repetition of the word veteran, it might be her purpose as people have a lot of respect to veterans, that is why she mentiones it more. She emphasizes that these people are veterans. Then, change of the length of sentences, shorter second sentence - much shorter then the other, brings attentions and keeps it.
