Práce srovnává zobrazení války v konzervativních a liberálních novinách vydaných v Kalifornii. Cílem práce je pomocí analýzy novinového diskurzu vyvodit, jakou ideologii tyto noviny šířily, a objasnit způsob, jakým mohou média ovlivnit vnímaní reality prostřednictvím volby jazykových prostředků.

The student presented her bachelor thesis.
Q: Trčková: How does the author account for the change in the representations of anti-war protests in the conservative press, when the newspaper first portrayed the march in a positive light and later on in a negative one? A: The day before the marches there was the article that it was a peace march. I would say that republicans were afraid of the protest to lose control. Q: Trčková: Do the newspapers employ any linguistic devices demonizing the enemy? In other words, apart from portraying the enemy as aggressive and mitigating the aggression of ''our‘‘ soldiers, do the newspapers use the ideological square in any other prominent way? A: I focused on participants, there were references to communists as Reds, etc. There was use of aggressive verbs e.g. The enemies swept into the city of Saigon. There were no animalistic terms. Q: Bell: You chose to analyze articles from two newspapers printed in close geographic proximity to each other (100 miles apart) in the center of the state, which was a Democratic Party-controlled area in the 1960s. Does a lack of geopolitical variation in your corpus strengthen or weaken your conclusions? Why or why not? A: These geographical areas were close to each other but one area voted for Nixon, there was the split in political ideology. Q: Bell: Nixon was a Californian. Is there evidence of journalistic bias towards his administration in the newspapers in your corpus? Did you take Nixon’s nativity into account during your analysis? A: I took into account his authority as president. His attitude won’t be changed, but it can undermine the respectability of the newspaper. I took the person as an authority. Q: Bell: Have you read Steinbeck Grapes of Wrath? A: No
