This bachelor's thesis focuses on the Harlem Renaissance in relation to black civil rights. Firstly, it deals with background and possible causes of this cultural and social African-American movement, which peaked in the 1920s, including the African-American Great Migration, the industrial recruitment of World War I, and increased racial discrimination. Consequently, there are given examples of actively involved African-Americans, whether leaders or artists, in the fight for civil rights and their first attempts to achieve equality in the United States.

Záznam průběhu obhajoby
The student presented her thesis.
Q, Bell: How does the art influence the time and place?
A: (The student answered.)
Q, Bell: Why Harlem?
A: Because New York was already a mecca. And there were many publishing centers already. (The student explained well.)
Q, Bell: Any other city that experienced another renaissance, like Harlem
A: Chicago for sure.
Q, Bell: What about the role of religion?
A: They were influenced by religion.
Q, Bell: Did gospel influence Harlem Renaissance?
A: It might.
Q: Can the BP writer give a quick example or two of a specific social, political or artistic change from the HR period to the 50s-60s CR period? This can take the form of examples from a work of art or literature, or it can be based on a social or political issue that shows either a particular positive or negative change. Give supporting details.
A: Political change for example. Reagan was in charge. I think he sent some document to establish some equal rights. Same citizenship, and other concerning equality. Also at the time before these civil movements, people moved to suburbs and blacks to the cities. They had influence on the politicians. The desire of blacks to have equality could be heard.
Q: What aspect of the HR do you feel is most important to be remembered and studied today - political or social thought, literature, music, the visual arts, something else? Give specific examples to support your answer.
A: All aspects were somehow connected and important to know.
Q, Bell: Name another decade when music led to social change.
A: Jazz was important 1950s, 60s, but I cannot name any other.
